9月5日 Pop quizIt's not uncommon for most of us to visit www.timesofindia.com. Your one stop to masala news(?). And it's not uncommon either to marvel at the pop-up capabilities of this website. The website's pop-up-capabilties (for lack of better word) have even found honorable mentions in slashdot chronicles. So I sit here on my pop-up-blocker-less machine and use an old lesson I learnt in school.
Open: %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
(Hint: Start->Run->type(Notepad %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts)->press enter)
Append the following to the file:
127.0.0.1 ads.indiatimes.com
127.0.0.1 ww.smashits.com Close the file:
Retry the timesofindia page. Tada, look Ma no popup-blockers!
P.S: Its quite possible that this is not an exhaustive list of ad pages. Keep adding them as and when they popup. I wonder if indiatimes/timesofindia will pull out another dirty trick from their bag to beat this!
P.S2: This method is also discussed under http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_file 8月19日 Zotob infected?Running an unpatched Win2000 machine? You may be at risk already. If you don't use autoupdate/windowsupdate get the patch from

How do I know my machine is infected?
"You click on it and it will tell you if you are infected. And if you are, it will clean the worm off your PC."
Note that the worm can infect unpatched Windows 2000 systems that aren't protected by a firewall without any user interaction. |
