2月16日 Water No Ice Please, we are IndiansSo, I am flying back from NY to Seattle and the air hostess asks me what I would like to drink. "Water, no ice please" I demand. The phrase is most easily understood phrase wherever drinks are served in this nation. Twist it a bit and you are sure to repeat yourself. In the past I tried(unsuccessfully) lots of ways to get my point across
"Just water",
"Iceless water",
"Water without ice",
"I will have water, but please don't put any ice in it".
The problem: Say "Water" and the Ice comes free.
Anyways, so the prettty-but-not-talking-to-anyone dame sitting next to me suddenly wants to get personal with me on her back-home-boyfriend's behalf.
"Hey, I hope you don't mind, I really have to ask this. You see, my Bf runs a restaurant in NY and he always wonders why Indians don't like to have ice in their water"
The artist in me wants to tell some wild stories with camels/tiger/elephants and may be an ice god. But perhaps artistic instincts don't work very well at 30K feet. I tell her "Look, when I want to have water, I want to have just water". Confused/Disappointed she goes back where she came from, leaving me wondering alone. Why do we Indians not like water on the rocks? My reasons,
1) I hate not being able to gulp the water down and having to sip it instead.
2) Nothing against the ice, but when I am drinking/sipping my water I hate the ice cubes resting against my upper lip /teeth. Btw, don't even tell me to use the straw!
3) Its freaking cold!
So people, if you are ever going to serve water to any Indian and would like to be tipped, bring them some ice-less water*. (Don't expect too much, we Indians are cheap )
Btw, don't forget to read the news article below.
Water no ice any day: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11318353/
*Will it be considered racial discrimination if an Indian gets served water without ice?
PS: A few of my fellow countrymen did not like the "cheap" comment I made above. Do click the highlighted word. |
