10月23日 Bhaarti Naari! & LataHeard the "aajaa piya tohe pyaar doon" song this week. If you watched Chitrahaar often, you'd remember this song from Baharon Ke Sapne. Its a B/W movie and features Asha Parekh(surprisingly she looks good) and Rajesh Kaka Khanna. From what I can remember we see a really grumpy Rajesh sitting somewhere and Asha Parekh sing to him. Boy is she in love! The lyrics to this song can be found at
It's a bit shocking to know that some women can think this way. Take this line for instance,
"palakon se chunn daloongi mai, kaante tere paanv ke"
Eeks, scary huh?
I am sure it is more of a fantasy of the lyricist(Majrooh Sultanpuri). Must have died an unhappy man.
But these are not the reasons why I decided to honor this song by mentioning it here. There was a time when Lata could really sing good. This was then. If you have been calling yourself a Lata fan and havent heard this one, you have been lying. Lata sing's this one with girlish delight and she sounds caring and loving(albeit inexperienced).

8月18日 Umrao "Meri" JaanHappened to revisit some of the not-so-oldies. I decided to listen to "Umrao Jaan" again. Based on a classic 19th century Urdu novel, its the story of Umrao Jaan, a courtesan who gets abducted as a child and forced into the profession. She goes up to become very famous and highly admired by "elites" of the society. The story explores the position of a woman who is financially independent, popular and has a standing of her own in society. Its being long since I saw this movie so I will hold on to other comments. If not for anything else, you need to listen this just for Asha Bhosle. She is simply marvelous this time around. Hate her or love her, you got to confess she is talented.
Besides bringing over the nostalgic memories of the days these songs were played in my dad's black philips tape-recorder (Taped from chitrahaar) the session left me completely spellbound. I am literally hooked to the album now. In fact, yours truly spent hours finding the meaning of some of the Urdu words that are hard to crack otherwise. On being able to understand the wordings the beauty of the song multiplies many folds. Take, for instance, the "In aankhon ki masti ke". The song is tribute to beauty and the beholder relationship. Only this time its the eyes of the "beauty" that is being discussed.

vaabasta = related; (pardon my C habit)
afsaane = Legends;
